A Closer look at the Flip book
The flip book was an ancient form of media which was first introduced into American society by the late 1800,s by Henry Van Hovenbergh of Elizabeth. Although it was a primitive form of animation it laid the foundation of many cartoons and animations of today. “Like motion pictures the viewer relied substantially on diligence of vision "taken from (flippies inc, 2003).Which in turn created an illusion to the eyes. It was first known as "kineograph" which literally means moving image.
(Fouché, 2014) wrote that the flip book has many alternative names like daumenkino which, literally means "thumb cinema". In the 1960,s the flipbook gained popularity due to multinational companies such as McDonalds, "Disney" and "Canada dry" which used them for promotional purposes. Taken from (flippies inc, 2003).
The design for the flip book was very basic and similar to a small notebook. (Fouché,2014) wrote that "it was originally stapled and held in one hand while you flip over the pages with the thumb of the other hand, either from front to back or from back to front the drawings gave the illusion of motion slower or faster depending on the speed". It was known for a long time as a pocket cinema (cinéma de poche in French).Reported by (Fouché, 2014).This media is the link between the book, and the animated picture. When we think about it in such a short period of time we see an evolutionary development of the flip book into its predecessor the "Cinematograph" (true cinema). For this reason I believe that the flipbook was an important form of media as it paved the way for modern animation.
